Community Leaders Breakfast The Community Leaders Breakfast is a public relations and fundraising event hosted by youth centres/initiatives across the country during International Youth Week (2nd Week of May) with the support of the mayor, reeve, warden, chief, town council, elder, or key decision makers in your community. To increase positive awareness of the value of your centre/initiative to the leaders in your community. To inform and provide information and awareness through community leaders to the community of activities and benefits of organization To educate community leaders about your services, successes, needs. To provide youth the opportunity to speak to community leaders. To build support and community connectedness. To enhance sustainability. To create an annual event with potential for growth. To appreciate existing financial and volunteer support. To increase potential financial and volunteer support. To raise the positive profile of your centre/initiative within your community. To raise the profile of youth centres/initiatives in the entire country. To attract positive provincial and national awareness. To strengthen national network. Using a Timeline to Get Started The TYPS Timeline is a non-linear planning tool that makes it easy for youth and adults to plan an event. This helps youth to be involved right from the beginning, and ensures an event that will represent your youth, your organization, and this project in the best light possible. The Timeline is demonstrated on page 46 of the TYPS Best Practices Manual. Allow as much lead time as possible for an event such as this. The more time you have to fine tune details and prepare, the more successful your event will be. This event also fits the 5 Wins. TYPS Model and The Community Leaders Breakfast This event provides an opportunity to employ and demonstrate almost all aspects of the TYPS Model, from engaging and mentoring youth to building community partnerships. Planning and execution of this event increases youth ownership, one of the key ingredients to a successful centre. The breakfast can be used to award certificates for youth recognition, provide an opportunity for them to create a presentation, and encourage meaningful dialogue between youth and decision makers in the community. The Timeline includes Participatory Action Research and Participatory Evaluation, both significant processes described in the TYPS Best Practices Manual on pages 36-38, and part of the TYPS Tri-Model of Social Inclusion. Community connectedness is enhanced, networks grow, and partnerships can be developed. Volunteer sources expand, and the breakfast can be used as an opportunity to recruit specific volunteer roles. Community leaders may become mentors to youth, and conversely, youth can demonstrate their ability to mentor and work with adults to address and resolve community issues pertinent to them. This is also an opportunity to improve media relations and gain positive media recognition. This is also an opportunity to demonstrate effective coordination of your centre or initiative. A well run event will let your community leaders know that the work you are doing is of value to your community, and that staff, board of directors, volunteers and youth are creating positive energy and opportunity. This event will expand your sustainable energy source. Every initiative needs people behind it that are invested in its well being and its sustainability. This is a great opportunity to attract new interest and recruit support. IV. Areas to Develop Once you do a timeline you will be able to see specific areas that may require development. You may even want to give some of these areas a timeline of their own. For example, if two or three youth want to do a presentation, there may be a series of specific activities to begin, from researching information they want to share to practicing public speaking skills. This doesnt mean youth have to present in ways that are commonly used either. As they get together and talk, their creativity may lead to a whole new way of getting a message across. One group in Manitoba created a series of monologues that told true stories of youth, but were acted out by other youth in the form of a play. Stories can be very powerful. Another group in PEI used Powerpoint, but once again through simple drawings on slides, told the moving story of one youth and the impact his involvement with their activities had had. The point is, a well done event takes time to develop. This can become an integral component of your program, and when led with enthusiasm, can evolve into something that engages youth in many different ways. The key is to form a team that is committed to hosting a successful event, and allowing the time to hone it and make it comfortable. Practice builds competence, so the more opportunity youth have to develop new skills and practice them, the better. Some Activity Questions as a Group Who is the key person in your community that would put the invitation out on your behalf? i.e. mayor Do you have access to him/her? Who would be best to approach them? How can you prepare for this? How will you form a pro active team/committee to begin this project? Team should include staff, board members, youth. How can you extend that committee to include one or two community leaders? Do you have a list of all potential invitees? How can you work with the mayor to make sure the list is inclusive? Do you have any connections for a good venue? Do you have the facility to host an event like this? Do you have a young chefs program or something similar that might get involved? What donations could you find to help offset costs. Do you have support materials to hand out? Do you have display boards, banners, etc. What kinds of statistics do you have available that will speak to politicians? Do you have photos, media clippings, etc. that convey your involvement with the community? i.e. Santa Claus Parade, carwash, dances. Can you provide stats on the number of community service hours your centre provides, number of volunteer hours, etc. How can you showcase youth and use their energy and enthusiasm during this event? Are there awards, recognitions that can be made to community members already supporting the youth centre and to youth for their achievements? What type of presentation could youth do that would really speak to the value of your organization? Would you want to have door prizes or giveaways to make it more fun? How many people will you need on site at the event in order for it to run smoothly? Could there be centerpieces on the tables made by youth, or artwork on display, etc. Do you have Best Practices in place, good policies and procedures, an orientation manual for volunteers, job descriptions for volunteers? Can you be ready to welcome new volunteers? Can you think of a creative way to solicit donations? What would work in your community? Is there a community member who has benefited in some significant way from their involvement with the youth centre that might say a few words? A youth that has grown successfully, a family or parent that would speak to the difference involvement with the youth centre made to them? Ask your youth Whats important to you and other kids you know? What kind of difference does the youth centre make? How do you want to present this? Talk, monologue Practice, Presentation and Follow Up Dont underestimate the value an event like this can have on your sustainability. Often, when youth centres/initiatives are faced with serious challenges, it is their community connectedness that makes all the difference. When positive awareness and positive relationships already exist, it is much easier to build and sustain an organization. Sustainability isnt just about dollars, it is inherently dependent on the five areas discussed earlier, encompassed by the TYPS TriModel: Youth Ownership Community Connectedness Mentorship Effective Coordination Sustainable Energy Source An event like a Community Leaders Breakfast can enhance each of these facets. Be sure to be ready to welcome in new and enthusiastic offers of help and support after your event. Send out thank yous and, if you have a newsletter, add people to your list that may not already be on it, but came to the breakfast. Get feedback about how to make the event even better next year. Shortly after the event, have a debriefing while things are fresh and make notes for next year.
